Overview

The Downtown East Side is a photo ebook by Claire Martin, Australian rising star of world photography. It features art photographs taken in the Downtown East Side, infamous urban area in Vancouver, Canada. Through a series of raw portraits, she denounces the lack of interest of modern societies towards slums communities left to their fate, drugs, prostitution and AIDS. Far from sordid realism, Claire captures snapshots of real life and emphasises on glimpses of humanity of these ‘Wretched of modern times’.

Claire Martin's work from this series has been exhibited at the Australian Centre for Photography, the Deichtorhallen House of Photography Hamburg Germany, and the Association of Photographers Gallery, London, as well as featuring in the core program for many international photo festivals. Publications include Vanity Fair UK, The Wall Street Journal, Fader Magazine, The Australian Financial Review and The British Journal of Photography.

Author's profile

Claire began her career by pursuing a degree in Social Work, however, she changed her focus to Photography when she realised that change can also be effected through this 
medium. Her ongoing documentation of marginalised communities within prosperous nations won her the Magnum Foundation 2010 Inge Morath award for Female Photographers under 30 years of age.

She is a member of the renowned Australian Documentary Photo Collective “Oculi” and her work is distributed through Agency VU in Europe.

Claire lives in Perth, Western Australia, where she works as a freelance photojournalist and socially concerned documentary artist.
